Oak Hill, AL

Oak Hill is a small town located in Jefferson County, Alabama. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. Oak Hill is known for its beautiful oak trees and rolling hills. The town was founded in 1892 by Dr. James H. Dillard and his wife, Addie Mae Dillard. The town was named after the oak trees that lined the streets of the original settlement.

The history of Oak Hill can be traced back to 1892 when Dr. James H. Dillard and his wife, Addie Mae Dillard, founded the town on land that they purchased from John Witherspoon Smith and his wife Martha Smith (the daughter of General James Longstreet). At first, Oak Hill consisted of just a few homes and a store operated by Mr. Jethro Bassett (the father-in-law of Dr. Dillard). In 1895, Oak Hill had its first schoolhouse built on what is now known as School Street (named for Jethro Bassett). In 1897, a post office was established in Oak Hill and in 1898 the first church service was held in the community – First Baptist Church (now known as Trinity United Methodist Church).

In 1902, two new businesses were opened in Oak Hill – a bank operated by Mr. Averett Bowersox and a hardware store run by Mr . Cephus Crawford . In 1906, Mrs . Lula Mayes opened what is now known as Mayes’ Drug Store which remains open today under different ownership but with many of the same features and services as when it first opened over 100 years ago! That same year saw the construction of what is now called Old Main – originally used as a school building but later converted into an administrative center for the townspeople . In 1910 , another business was added to Oak Hill when Mr . George Washington Carver opened up his famous peanut factory which employed dozens of people during peak production times . By 1920 , there were already enough residents living in Oakhill to form their own fire department which was housed initially at Engine Company No 1 located on South Main Street before moving to its current location on East Main Street later that year .

In 1941 , during World War II , an airfield called Camp Shelby was established just outside of town near where Highway 31 intersects with Highway 431 ; this airfield would later become Huntsville International Airport Today , you can still see remnants of this military installation including several abandoned buildings that are still standing today ! After World War II ended , more families began moving into Oakhill thanks to affordable housing prices and excellent schools available in the community ; this trend continued through most of the 20th century until recently when population growth has slowed down somewhat due to increased competition from other nearby communities such as Madisonville and Scottsboro Village which have been able to offer more amenities such as shopping malls , restaurants etc… However despite these challenges , there are still many families residing in Oakhill who are proud to call it home !
