Henderson, AR

Henderson, Arkansas is a city located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 33,811 at the 2010 census. Henderson is the county seat of Pulaski County and is home to the University of Central Arkansas.

The city of Henderson was founded in 1871 by John Henderson and James Lusk. The town was named for General William Tecumseh Sherman, who had just visited the area. The first business in Henderson was a general store opened by John Henderson and James Lusk. In 1872, J.D. Beasley opened the first hotel in Henderson; it was called the "Sherman House."

The railroad arrived in Henderson in 1875 and helped spur growth of the town. By 1880 there were already enough people living in Henderson to form a town council and hold its first meeting. A post office had been established under the name " Henderson" on April 6, 1870, with James Lusk as postmaster.

In 1886, Jethro Woodard built what is now known as Woodard Hall on Main Street (now known as University Avenue). This building served as both a courthouse and public hall until 1912 when a new courthouse was built downtown.

During World War I there were many soldiers stationed in nearby Fort Smith who needed housing and began looking for places to live outside of their base camps. One such place was near where Henderson now stands; this area became known as Soldier's Hill after the soldiers moved into it.

In 1917, Wanda Hendrix opened Hendrix Pharmacy which became one of the most successful businesses in town during that time period due to its location close to both military bases and civilians alike. In 1923 Rufus Payne opened Payne's Department Store which also became one of the most successful businesses during that time period due to its location close to both military bases and civilians alike; Payne's Department Store remains open today as an anchor store for downtown Henderson."
