Monticello, AR

Monticello is a small town located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pulaski County.

The town was founded in 1836 by John Monticello and his wife, Martha Jefferson Randolph. The town was named for Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson. The first buildings were constructed of logs and earth. A log courthouse was built in 1837 and a Methodist church followed in 1840. In 1842, a brick jail was erected and a newspaper called "The Monticello Journal" began publication that year. By 1850 there were more than fifty buildings in the town.

Monticello is now known for its antique shops and galleries as well as its historic district which includes many antebellum homes and businesses dating from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth century. The district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Monticello Historic District

Today, Monticello is an active small town with many businesses and attractions including: two movie theaters; two restaurants; several antique stores; four banks; three churches; two post offices; three schools (grades pre-kindergarten through twelve); two golf courses (one public, one private); four parks (including an amusement park); four tennis courts; a swimming pool; five ballfields/lawns; three ice rinks (public/private); four hair salons/spas.; two hardware stores/home centers.; one pharmacy.; one optometrist.; one dentist.; one veterinarian.; several car dealerships.; several gift shops./shops including: a yarn shop., an art gallery., a quilt shop., etc.. There are also numerous clubs and organizations including: Kiwanis Club., Lions Club., 4-H Club., Rotary Club., Elks Lodge.), etc..
