Ulm was founded in 1853 by German immigrants and named for Ulm, in southern Germany. The town's economy was initially based on agriculture and cotton milling; however, since the early 1990s, it has experienced significant growth as a result of its proximity to Little Rock and its location within easy driving distance of major metropolitan areas such as Memphis and Tulsa. As a result of this growth, Ulm has experienced significant increases in both housing prices and population density; as of 2007, median housing prices were $130,000 (adjusted for inflation), while the population density was approximately 9 persons per square mile (3/km²).
The majority of Ulm's residents are white collar workers; as a result, there is not a large concentration of blue-collar jobs within the town itself. However, there are several industrial parks located near Ulm which provide employment for both blue-collar workers and white-collar professionals. Additionally, Ulm is home to two universities – Southern Arkansas University– Magnolia Campus and Ouachita Baptist University – which have contributed to the town's overall diversity and economic stability.
