The town of Archer was founded in 1887 by George W. Archer and his brother-in-law, J.D. Woodruff. The town was named after John Farrar, 1st Baron Farrar, who was an English judge and politician who served as Lord Chief Justice from 1827 to 1830 and as Home Secretary from 1830 to 1834 under the premiership of Sir Robert Peel.
