Centerville is a small town located in the northeast corner of Fulton County, Georgia. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Centerville is home to a variety of businesses and industries, including a hospital, an elementary school, and several churches.
The history of Centerville can be traced back to 1827 when General James Oglethorpe founded the city of Savannah on the banks of the Savannah River. In 1836, General Andrew Jackson purchased land in what is now Centerville for use as a military post. The post was named Fort McAllister in honor of General McAllister who had died earlier that year. In 1851, Fort McAllister was renamed Fort Gaines in honor of Major General Edmund Kirby Smith who had fought in the Mexican-American War.
In 1871, Centerville became incorporated as a town after voters approved an ordinance to that effect. The first mayor of Centerville was Jethro Minor Browning who served for one year. The first business opened in Centerville was a general store owned by Jesse Capps.
Today, Centerville is home to several businesses and industries including an elementary school (Centennial Elementary School), a hospital (Fulton Regional Medical Center), and several churches (Church Of God In Christ; First Baptist Church; United Methodist Church). Additionally, Centerville is home to two parks - Heritage Park and Veterans Memorial Park - which offer residents plenty of opportunities for recreation and relaxation
