Lake City is a small town located in Johnson County, Kansas. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. Lake City is the county seat of Johnson County.

The first settlers arrived in 1854 and established a trading post on the banks of the Kaw River. The town was named for General William Tecumseh Sherman's headquarters during the American Civil War. In 1875, a post office was established and named after General Sherman's wife, Ellen. In 1881, Lake City had its first railroad depot and became an important shipping point for cattle and wheat crops.

In 1906, Lake City became home to Kansas State Normal School (now Eastern Kentucky University). The school opened with only twelve students but quickly grew to become one of the largest colleges in Kansas with over 2,000 students by 1920. During World War II, K-State Normal School served as a training ground for military personnel who would later serve in Europe and Asia.

Today, Lake City is still an important community with many businesses and services available. The downtown area features several shops and restaurants as well as a movie theater and library. There are also several parks located throughout the town that offer residents plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature
