The economy of Hineston is largely based on agriculture. However, due to its location near major transportation arteries (I-10 and I-12), Hineston has seen a recent influx in commercial development. This includes a new Walmart Supercenter that opened in 2012, as well as several other large retail stores. Additionally, Hineston has seen an increase in residential development over the past few years. This includes new subdivisions such as Timber Creek Estates and Willowbrook Estates, both of which are situated on large tracts of land adjacent to rural areas.
Real estate in Hineston is generally priced comparably to other parts of Southwest Louisiana. In general, homes within desirable neighborhoods (such as Timber Creek Estates) are worth more than those located in less desirable areas (such as Willowbrook Estates). However, because there is not a great deal of inventory available for sale within Hineston at this time, prices for homes can be quite high – especially during periods of peak demand (such as during the holiday season).
