Mathews, LA

Mathews, Louisiana is a small town located in the southwestern corner of the state. The population was just over 2,000 in 2010 and has been steadily declining since then. The town's economy is based largely on agriculture and real estate.

The first settlers arrived in Mathews in the early 1800s. At that time, the area was part of Spanish Louisiana. The town's name likely comes from one of the early settlers, John Matthews.

The economy of Mathews was initially based on cotton cultivation and timber production. However, by the late 1800s, railroads had been built through the area and new industries began to develop, including oil production and agriculture. Today, agriculture remains a major source of income for residents of Mathews.

Real estate is an important part of the economy in Mathews as well. The town has a limited number of housing options and many residents are forced to commute to jobs outside of town or move away altogether due to lack of available housing options. As a result, real estate prices are high relative to other areas in Louisiana.
