Dameron is a small town located in Montgomery County, Maryland. The population of Dameron was 1,527 at the 2010 census. Dameron is located in the northeast corner of Montgomery County and is bordered by Carroll County to the north, Frederick County to the east, and Howard County to the south.
The town of Dameron was founded in 1892 as a railroad stop on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. The town's name is derived from General James B. Dameron, who served in both World Wars I and II. The original plat for Dameron was filed on October 3, 1892 with 160 acres designated for residential development. By 1906 there were 1,000 residents living in Dameron and it had become an important railroad junction serving farmers and commuters from nearby townships. In 1916 a post office was established and by 1922 there were 2 stores and a bank in town.
In 1923 a fire destroyed much of downtown Dameron including several businesses that had been built with brick veneer construction typical of early 20th century small towns across America. A new downtown area was developed along Main Street which featured larger brick buildings constructed with modern fireproofing techniques that allowed for continued growth into the 21st century despite another devastating fire that destroyed much of downtown again on July 4th, 2003 .
Today there are five businesses remaining in downtown Dameron: two banks (the original Bank of America building which opened in 1924 and First National Bank), an antique store (since relocated), a hair salon/day spa (since relocated), and an ice cream shop/café (since relocated). There are also three churches - United Methodist Church (built 1921), Grace Lutheran Church (built 1928), and First Baptist Church - all located within walking distance of each other on Main Street .
Dameron has experienced steady population growth since its inception as a railroad stop; however due to its rural location it has not seen significant development outside its historic core over the past several decades . This has led to modest housing stock consisting primarily of single-family homes built between 1920-1960 . There are also some newer homes being constructed near Interstate 70 but these are generally limited to detached dwellings or mobile home parks rather than traditional neighborhoods .
The majority of housing stock is either single-family or duplexes; however there are also some apartments available for rent near Main Street . Property values have increased steadily over time due to limited supply coupled with healthy demand from families seeking suburban lifestyles without having to leave their hometowns . As such median home prices range from $130K-$220K although prices can be considerably higher or lower depending on location within town or specific type or size of home being offered For example , one recent sale at 8071 Old Georgetown Road sold for $315K while another at 9609 Old Georgetown Road sold for just $145K !
There are no major commercial developments planned for Downtown D Cameron in the foreseeable future ; however this may change if new businesses locate here because they typically generate more jobs than retail establishments do Over time , Downtown could see more restaurants , bars , shops , etc as long as they meet local zoning requirements which currently allow general retail sales including liquor licenses but not restaurants or nightlife establishments
One potential issue facing Downtown would be if traffic congestion became an issue because many residents commute into Washington DC via I-70 ; however this could be alleviated somewhat by additional development around Town Square which currently features several small businesses including two coffee shops & one convenience store Additionally , Montgomery Community College offers classes at Town Square which may help sustain these businesses during times when students are not present Another potential solution would be increasing public transportation options such as MARC train service which currently stops just outside Town Square However regardless what happens Downtown will continue to serve as an important focal point for social activities throughout the year especially during festivals like Fall Festival & Christmas Parade
