Schlater is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi. It is located on the north side of the Pearl River, about thirty-five miles east of Jackson. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. Schlater is served by the Schlater School District.
The town was founded in 1892 by J.W. and Lillie (Baxter) Schlater and named for their son, Lewis Schlater. The first business in town was a general store operated by J.W. Schlater and his brother-in-law, A.D. Baxter. In 1895, Lewis Schlater built a cotton gin and began to produce cottonseed oil commercially; this became an important industry in the community later on. By 1900, there were two churches (the Presbyterian and Methodist), two schools (the one-room schoolhouse and a consolidated school), three businesses (a grocery store operated by J Bowers & Son; a blacksmith shop operated by Wm Hargrave; and a drugstore run by Dr Capps), four cotton gins operating locally, two sawmills operating locally, and several farmers raising crops on land that had been cleared of timber years earlier.(1)

There are also now several restaurants available to residents including: Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Barbecue restaurant located off Highway 49 just west of town near Interstate 20 Exit 191A;" Chick Fil A Restaurant" located off Highway 49 just east of town near Interstate 20 Exit 191B;" Dairy Queen" located just south of Walmart Supercenter on Highway 49;" KFC Restaurant" located just north of Walmart Supercenter on Highway 49;" Pizza Hut" located inside Walgreens Pharmacy adjacent to KFC Restaurant."
There are also now several recreational opportunities available to residents such as fishing at various locations along the Pearl River or playing golf at various courses within driving distance such as Indian Hills Golf Course or Magnolia Country Club.(4)
