Braymer is a small town located in Warren County, Missouri. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Braymer is home to the Braymer Mill and the Braymer Historic District.
The town of Braymer was founded in 1872 by George W. Braymer and his brother-in-law, J.D. Browning. The town was named for their father's hometown of Braymer, England. The original mill site was on the east side of the Current River near its confluence with the Spring River. In 1881, a new mill site was established on higher ground on what is now Main Street (formerly known as Mill Road). The original mill burned down in 1889 and was replaced by a larger structure that still stands today (the current mill building).
The town grew rapidly due to its location on major transportation routes - railroads and highways - and its proximity to markets in Kansas City and St Joseph, Missouri. By 1930, there were more than 1,000 residents living in Braymer. However, during World War II many residents left for military service or other reasons and by 1970 only 500 people remained in the town. In recent years however, there has been a resurgence of interest in Braymer with new businesses opening up and more people moving back into the community.
Today, much of what makes Braymer unique remains unchanged - including its historic district which contains several buildings from around 1900 including the old post office (now used as a museum), several stores (including an antique store), two churches (St John's Episcopal Church and First Baptist Church), a schoolhouse (now used as apartments) and several homes from that era including one built by George W. Braymer himself! There are also several newer businesses located within the historic district including an art gallery/studio called "The Gallery at Main & Spring", two restaurants - "The Blue Room" & "Cafe Amore" - two bars - "The Rusty Nail" & "Doc's Place" - as well as two banks: First National Bank & Trust Company & Citizens State Bank Of Warren County There are also numerous antique shops located throughout downtown Braymer along with several bed-and-breakfasts catering to tourists who come to visit this charming little town!
