Middlesex, NC

Middlesex is a town located in the eastern part of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. Middlesex is bordered by Union and Davidson counties to the north, east and south respectively.

The town of Middlesex was founded in 1792 as a small settlement on land donated by General James Moore. The town was named for Middlesex County, England. In 1868, Middlesex became an incorporated municipality. The first post office opened in 1892 and operated until 1965.

Today, Middlesex is a thriving community with a diverse economy that includes manufacturing, health care services, retail businesses and agriculture. The town's primary industry is textile production with mills located along the Catawba River and railroad tracks that run through the center of town. Other major employers include Smithfield Foods Inc., which operates a pork processing plant in Middlesex; Cardinal Health Corporation; DaimlerChrysler Corporation; Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp.; Aetna Life & Casualty Company; NCR Corporation (formerly NCR Corporation); First Citizens Bancshares Inc.; Jabil Circuit Inc.; Lowe's Companies Inc.; Wells Fargo Bank N.A.; SunTrust Banks Inc.; BB&T Financial Services LLC; PNC Financial Services Group, Inc.; US Bancorp (formerly United States Bank National Association); Charlotte-based SAS Institute and IBM Corp.'s Thomas J Watson Research Center are also headquartered in or near Middlesex.
