The first Europeans to visit what would become Waterford were probably the Dutch in 1682 and 1683 when they sailed up the Delaware River on their way to trade with the Native Americans in what is now New York City and Philadelphia. The English arrived in 1729 and began settling along both banks of the Delaware River near present-day Bristol Township and Upper Makefield Township, just north of present-day Waterford Borough. In 1753, William Penn granted a tract of land that included present-day Waterford Borough to Captain John Dickinson for his military service during Queen Anne's War (1702-1713). This tract became known as Dickinson's Purchase and today comprises much of eastern Bucks County outside of Philadelphia city limits.
In 1798, an Act was passed by Congress authorizing the construction of a canal from Trenton to Philadelphia which would pass through present-day Waterford Borough on its way to connect with Philadelphia's canals system downtown near Market Street (now Independence Mall). However, due to financial difficulties caused by America's War for Independence (1775-1783), only a small portion of this ambitious project was ever completed - between Bristol Township and Upper Makefield Township - which became known as Canal Road or "Canal Way".
In 1825, an Act was passed by Congress allowing for the incorporation of townships throughout Pennsylvania; Waterford Township was formed that same year from portions of Dickinson's Purchase and parts of Bristol Township and Upper Makefield Township. The original town site lay just south of where Main Street crosses State Route 202 today; however due to rapid development over time, most town residents now live well beyond these original boundaries which now encompass much more than just " Waterford".
As early as 1827 there were reports that people were buying property in what would become Waterford Borough simply because it lay adjacent to one or more navigable rivers - namely the Delaware River which served as both transportation route and natural boundary between different sections/townships within Bucks County at that time; furthermore, numerous mills were located along both banks of these rivers making them ideal locations for homes/businesses etc...
The first recorded sale in what would become Waterford Borough occurred on October 12th 1827 when James Haines purchased Lot No 2 from Joseph Hartman for $1125 - this lot lay just south/westof where Main Street crosses State Route 202 today! By 1830 there were already reports indicating that businesses were being established along Canal Road including a blacksmith shop operated by George Wetherill Sr., two general stores run by John McKean & David Miller respectively (both located near where Canal Road intersects Old York Road today), two taverns run by Michael McGinley & James O'Donnell respectively (both located near where Old York Road intersects Canal Road today), as well as several other small businesses etc...
By 1840 there were already reports indicating that lots had been subdivided into smaller lots further down Canal Road thus facilitating even greater development; this trend continued throughout most if not all subsequent decades leading up until World War II when virtually every lot within what would become Waterford Borough had been developed at some point or another!
As mentioned earlier, water transportation played an important role in facilitating development throughout much if not all early 20th century history within what would eventually become known as " Waterford"; one such example is how Canalside Park - originally known simply as "Canal Park" prior to 1930 - actually got its name from how it once looked like: namely how each individual lot upon which it was built sat atop large concrete pads filled with water allowing boats/boatswains shops etc...to be easily accessed via canal transportation! Furthermore, numerous bridges spanning both creeks & rivers within what would eventually become Waterburg have also been instrumental in facilitating growth over time including: Bridge #1 over Little Turkey Creek aka Turkey Run Creek ; Bridge #2 over Big Turkey Creek aka Turkey Run Creek ; Bridge #3 over West Branch Brandywine Creek aka Brandywine River ; Bridge #4 over East Branch Brandywine Creek aka Brandywine River ; Bridge #5 over North Branch Brandywine Creek aka Brandywine River ; Bridge #6 over South Branch Brandywine Creek aka Brandywine River ; Bridge #7over Raccoon Run creek aka Raccoon Run river ;Bridge#8over Piney Brook creekaka Piney Brook river .etc...etc...
