Linden is a town in Henrico County, Virginia, United States. The population was 10,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Linden was founded in 1752 by George Washington's stepfather Augustine Washington and named for his mother Elizabeth Parke Custis. The town was originally settled on land that had been granted to Augustine Washington by King George II of Great Britain. The first house in Linden was built by Augustine Washington in 1752 on land that he had purchased from Colonel William Byrd III.
The early economy of Linden depended heavily on tobacco cultivation and processing. By the mid-19th century, however, cotton plantations had replaced tobacco as the major crop grown in the area. In addition to cotton, other crops grown in Linden included corn, wheat, and soybeans.
During the American Civil War (1861-1865), much of Henrico County remained loyal to the Union while parts of it—including Linden—were occupied by Confederate forces. As a result of this conflict, much damage was done to buildings and infrastructure in Linden. Reconstruction following the war was difficult due to a lack of available resources and a population that had been traumatized by war events. However, by 1871 Linden had recovered sufficiently to host an annual agricultural fair known as "The Grand Carnival."
In recent years, Linden has experienced significant growth due to its proximity to Richmond and its strong economy based on services such as health care and technology consulting firms.. This growth has led to increased demand for housing and commercial space within the town limits; consequently, prices for both have increased significantly over time. Today there are several new residential developments underway or under construction within Linden including Arbor Hills Village (a gated community), Park Place (a mixed-use development featuring apartments, condos/townhomes, retail space including a grocery store), Stonegate at Dominion Lakes (an upscale gated community), Woodlands at Dominion Lakes (another upscale gated community), Willowbrook Estates (an affordable subdivision), Stonegate Commons (a mixed-use development featuring apartments above retail space), Willowbrook Commons II (an expansion project for Willowbrook Commons), Brookfield Woods I & II (two separate subdivisions located near Lake Anna Regional Park) , Brookfield Woods III & IV(two separate subdivisions located near Lake Anna Regional Park).
