The town was founded in 1892 by James and Margaret (Maggie) Falls. The FALLS family were early settlers in Wisconsin and played an important role in the development of the state. James Falls was a lumberman who built a sawmill and gristmill on the banks of Big Spring Creek. He also started a general store which became one of the main businesses in Jim Falls.
The FALLS family were very active in civic affairs and helped to build churches, schools, and other important infrastructure in Jim Falls. Maggie Fall's brother-in-law, John Hutton, was one of the first settlers in what would become known as Huttonville. John Hutton was also an early settler in Jim Falls and served as postmaster for many years.
