Lakewood is a city located in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 34,812. The city is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan and is bisected by Interstate 94.
The city was founded in 1892 as a resort town on land that had formerly been part of the estate of George Hearst. It was incorporated as a village in 1903 and as a city in 1907. The first major development in Lakewood was the construction of the Grand Hotel (now known as the Sheraton Hotel) in 1902 by George Hearst and his brother-in-law John D. Rockefeller, Jr.. This hotel served as an important stop on the railroads serving Milwaukee and Chicago at that time.
In 1916, William Randolph Hearst purchased an additional 1,000 acres (4 km²) for his estate which became known as "Hearst Castle". In 1927 he sold it to Howard Hughes who turned it into one of Hollywood's most famous movie studios, RKO Pictures. In 1951 it was sold to CBS who used it primarily for television production until its closure in 2000.
