It became a borough on January 1, 1926 after being separated from Hackensack Township based on its increasing population and desire for self-government. The name East Rutherford comes from East River Township where landowner John Hance bought a farm in 1769 that included what would become East Rutherford. The first post office opened at Hance's farm on October 3, 1769 under the name " Rutherford". In 1871 Rutherfurd Avenue (now Route 4) was built through what would become East Rutherford linking Woodbridge Township to what is now North Arlington; this road passed through what are now neighborhoods of East Rutherford including Lyndhurst (then part of Woodbridge Township), Teterboro (part of Teterboro Township), River Edge (part of Hackensack Township) and Little Ferry (part of Saddle River township). On November 12th 1895 John Hance sold his farm to A.W. Beers who erected a brewery on the property that he named "Beers Brothers Brewery". The original brewery building still stands at 2 Beers Brothers Road near I-80 Exit 15A in Old Teterboro Village serving local restaurants today as "The Olde Dutch Inn Restaurant". In 1896 Henry Ford purchased land adjacent to Beers Brothers Brewery for his Highland Park Plant which began production on July 1st 1903; Ford later expanded his plant into what became known as "Fordlandia" just south of Route 4 in East Rutherford where he produced Model Ts until 1922 when it closed due to poor business conditions caused by World War I and Prohibition; Ford then moved his operations to Detroit where he founded Ford Motor Company .
In 1924 A&P supermarket founder George Roberts opened stores along Rutherfurd Avenue beginning with one at 2 Rutherfurd Avenue which later became Pathmark Plaza; Roberts soon expanded into other parts of New Jersey and eventually across the country opening stores under various names including Safeway, Albertsons supermarkets and Giant supermarkets before selling all operations to Kroger Incorporated in 1998; today Pathmark Plaza remains open as an A&P supermarket although it has been extensively remodeled over the years .
